Innovation friendly, plain language, resource efficient lawyering for everything open.

About

Open Counsel was founded by Andrew Rens to serve clients inspired by openness.

Lawyers are often seen as the status quo police and innovation killers. Lawyers, trained to focus on legal risk, ask “what might go wrong?” The more important question is “what needs to go right?”

Open Counsel does law differently; asking what an enterprise needs to do to achieve its mission. Open Counsel helps clients avoid the substantial opportunity cost of many legal strategies that close resources out of fear, uncertainty and doubt. Distributing resources under an open license is easy. A lot of smart lawyering has already been done to make open licenses effective. Open Counsel does more smart lawyering to help clients use open licenses, open standards and open policies strategically and restructure processes and organizations to make openness central.
